Description
The Pinto was introduced on September 11, 1970. The plan with the Ford Pinto and the Chevrolet Vega was to compete with VW, Datsun and Toyota.
CEO of Ford Lee Iacocca, at the introduction of the Pinto, was quoted saying. We'll drive them to the shores, referring of course to the importers.
I was managing a Datsun Dealership at the time, my sales team and I went to Ford and Chevrolet dealerships to look at the new entries, fearing they would cut into our business, we left with NO FEAR. The overall quality of both cars was way substandard when compared to the Datsun. Under the hood they both looked unfinished, especially the Vega. We all thought the body style was less than appealing.
In 2004, FORBS named the Pinto to its list of Worst Cars of All Time.
TIME magazine named the Pinto to their 2008 list of the Fifty Worst Cars of All Time.
BUSINESS WEEK named the Pinto to their list of the Ugliest Cars of the Past 50 Years.
To make things even worse for the Pinto, the vehicle's lack of reinforcing structure between the rear panel and the tank meant the tank would be pushed forward and punctured by the protruding bolts of the differential. And was blamed for causing the car to catch fore in a rear end collision, in addition there was a problem with the fuel filler neck that could also result in a fire.
