Description
51 Studebaker Commander.
Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868 under the name of the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, the company was originally a producer of wagons for farmers, miners, and the military. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name "Studebaker Automobile Company". The South Bend plant ceased production on December 20, 1963, and the last Studebaker car rolled off the Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, assembly line on March 16, 1966. (Wikipedia)
When I was in my teens and started driving, Ford and Chevy were the cars of choice for most of us Hot Rodders. Studebaker on the other hand, was the LAST car on the list for most of us at the time, in part because of it's odd body styling, lack of power and added to that, while you were driving it looked you were a mosquito fogger, trailing a cloud of white smoke for blocks behind you.
As it turned out when the company was near the end of it's down hill slide they began to produce some very stylish, sporty, powerful vehicles that most any one would be proud to own. Unfortunately by that time it was too late.
Studebaker, like Tucker, was considered to be ahead of it's time, when I look at them now I think I have to agree.
Studebaker is now working on re-emerging if you are interested you might want to take a look at their web site.
